PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Senior Kyle Engnell was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Stanford Invitational, announced the conference office Wednesday. The Homer Glen, Ill., native was the first collegian to cross the finish line in the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal-best time of 8:47.27, which ranks third in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten this season.
Engnell finished seventh overall and his personal-best time was just two seconds off the Olympic `B' standard of 8:45.00. His performance cracked the Illinois record books with the fifth-fastest steeplechase time in school history. The accolade is the first career honor for Engnell during the track season, and the first for the Illini during the outdoor season since Chris DeSilva on April 6, 2011.
Up Next: The Illini will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Tom Botts Invitational this weekend on Saturday, April 14.
