Illini Head to Indiana Relays

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Illinois men's track and field team will travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Relays on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The Illini are coming off of a successful weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invite, where they recorded two first-place finishes and 20 top-10 finishes, set 10 personal-bests and clocked nine times that ranked in the top-five of the Big Ten.
The No. 18 Illini will face a variety of teams this weekend, as the field includes Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools, as well as club teams. The Orange and Blue will be joined by No. 17 Alabama, along with Big Ten opponents Indiana and Ohio State.
Illinois will have a number of athletes competing in individual events on Friday, beginning with with Brandon Carrel in the unseeded men's pole vault at 2 p.m. CT, followed by David Kendziera in the unseeded long jump at 5 p.m. Running events will start at 2:25 p.m. as Vanier Joseph, Cam Viney, and Kendziera compete in the first round of the 60m hurdles, with the top-16 times advancing to the semifinals at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. Julian Smith, Fuad Akinbiyi and Maurice Watkins will compete in the first round of the 60m dash at 3:15 p.m., with the top-16 times advancing to the semifinals at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday.
Zebo Zebe will represent the Illini in the unseeded 200m race at 5:35 p.m., while Cam Viney and Darius Thomas will compete in the unseeded 600m just under an hour later. Invitational races will begin at 7:10 p.m. with Liam Markham in the mile, followed by Zebo Zebe and Malik Lee in the 600m. Brandon Stryganek looks to continue his success in the 200m, while Tommy King and Ian Barnett will compete in the 3,000m.
Action begins at 8:35 a.m. CT on Saturday with the morning section running events, including Maurice Watkins and Jade Ackerman in the 200m at 9:25 a.m. After the semifinals of the 60m dash and 60m hurdles, Brendan McDonnell and Jereme Atchison will compete in the 5,000m for the first time this season. Cam Viney will compete in the unseeded 400m at 12:30 p.m., with Connor Rachord running the unseeded 800m race less than an hour later. The invitational races will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the 400m dash, where defending Big Ten champion Stephon Pamilton will make his season debut in the event alongside teammate DJ Zahn. The final running event of the day will take place at 4:15 p.m. as Kenneth Allen, David Kendziera, Malik Lee and Zebo Zebe compete in the 4x400m relay. The pole vault crew of Matthew Bane, Cody Klein and Blaze Galardy will compete in the invitational section at 2 p.m.
