URBANA, Ill.. -- The Illinois men's cross country team hosted the Illini Open on Friday, the final meet of the regular season. The 8K race was held at the UI Arboretum, where all three Illini finished in the top-10.
"I was really excited with how we ran today," said head coach Jake Stewart. "The first five finishers are guys that are affiliated with the team. We had a really good day, and I was really pleased with how our guys competed and ran."
Sam Telfer crossed the finish line with a time of 25:19 to finish first for the squad and second overall. Jereme Atchison finished next, clocking a 25:37 to place fifth, while Ryan Burgoon finished eighth with a time of 25:57.
Unattached runner Jordan Herbert (24:57) won the race, while Joe Cowlin (25:24) set a personal-best time to finish third. Alex Gold (25:31) finished next to place fourth, while Alex Notton (26:16) and Trevor Kuehr (26:33) finished 13th and 18th, respectively.
"I think for the younger guys probably ran with a little more urgency today knowing that now we go back into training for a few months before the indoor track season starts," said Stewart. "Being the last regular season meet, I think they want to use the momentum of running well here going into indoors and outdoors."
The Orange and Blue will open the championship portion of the season next Sunday, Nov. 3 when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Big Ten Championships.
