NORMAL, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's cross country team placed second overall this Friday at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships in Normal, Ill. The Illini faced a field of 30 competitors and placed second overall with a team total of 72 points. In the University division, Illinois took the top spot with 34 points. "We used this race to work on things as a team," cross country coach Wendel McRaven said. "We ran with a good tempo for the first three miles and guys closed really well. We accomplished what we were looking to do and I feel good about the outcome." Sophomore Colin Mickow placed first for the Orange and Blue and seventh overall with an 8K time of 24:48. Following right behind him was teammate Dan Kremske, finishing with a time of 24:49. The sophomores took seventh and eighth overall respectively and second and third in the University Division. Following Mickow and Kremske were fellow Illini Nate Troester in 15th with a time of 25:10 and Michael Murray in 20th with a time of 25:54. "Mickow and Kremske closed well and passed a lot of people in the last few miles," McRaven said. "Once we throw in a couple more guys in the line-up that we are missing, it will change the dynamic a bit more as well. We will be able to be more aggressive and competitive later in the season when we race against some of the top teams in the country." Stephen Sambu from Rend Lake College took the individual title with a time of 23:48 and North Central College finished the meet with 56 points, capturing the overall team title. The Illini have next weekend off to prepare for the Wisconsin Inter-Regional on Friday, October 2. ILLINOIS RESULTS TEAM RESULTS (Top 5)
