DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freshman Juan Paul Green advanced to the 2013 Pan Am Junior Championships after finishing runner-up in the 400m at Drake Stadium on Saturday. Green will be a part of Team USA at the the Pan Am Junior Championships which will take place August 23-25 in Medellin, Columbia.
"I'm really pleased with Juan's performance," head coach Mike Turk said. "It's been a long season. For young guys coming off NCAA's with success, like Juan, it's not easy to turn it up to this level again. Sometimes the junior meet can be anti-climatic for the collegians. Juan's made his first national team and this can motivate him to keep working hard. It's a great opportunity for international experience."
Green ran out of lane four in the finals, with four athletes coming into the last 100m neck and neck. The All-American and Marcus Chambers, the winner of the event, separated themselves with 50 meters left. Green crossed the finish line in a time of 46.64 to Chambers' 46.55.
Green finishes his first season for the Fighting Illini as a NCAA All-American (4x400 & 400m), USATF Junior All-American (400m) and will compete for Team USA for the first time in his career later this summer.
