Green Sets Fastest Qualifying 400m Time
June 21, 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freshman Juan Paul Green highlighted the Fighting Illini men's track and field's action as he qualified for the finals of the 400m at the USA Junior Championships. Green set the fastest qualifying time in the prelims and will race in the finals on Saturday at 1:54 p.m. Freshman Cameron Viney also ran in the 400m hurdles semifinals in the senior division while freshman Will Brewster wrapped up competed in the 10,000m in the junior division.
Green ran in the third and final heat of the 400m first round on Friday afternoon, leading the race from start to finish. The All-American, who helped the Illini 4x400m relay team finish fifth at the NCAA Championships, crossed the line with a time of 46.59. Viney ran his second fastest 400m hurdle time on Friday, finishing with a time of 51.16. The time was fifth in his heat and 12th overall.
"Juan and Cam both ran very well today," head coach Mike Turk said. "Juan was in command the whole way and ran an outstanding race. He is right in the mix of things. With the hot weather and competition for a spot in the Pan Am Junior Team, I'm sure he will go hard tomorrow. Cam ran his second fastest time ever. Although he didn't advance, this was a terrific opportunity for him and he took advantage of it to gain some experience to a higher level. He's barely too old for the junior level and the youngest man in the competition. His performance was really quite good."
Competing in his first 10K as an Illini, Brewster finished with a time of 33:49.71 to finish 16th overall.
Live stream of Green's 400m final will be on USATF.TV at 1:54 p.m. CT.
