100m Squad Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA West Prelims
May 24, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - Three Illini advanced to the quarterfinal round in their respective events to start the competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championship. Senior Andrew Riley (100m), senior Stanley Azie (100m) and freshman Brandon Stryganek (100m) each advanced to the next round at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
"It was hot and although a bit uncomfortable, I think it brought out the best in our sprinters today," head coach Mike Turk said. "Having all three guys advance in the 100m is fantastic. Andrew (Riley) ran nice and easy just to advance and come away with a new personal-best. I was really proud of Stanley (Azie). He showed a lot of composure in the blocks and ran with a chip on his shoulder. That was his second all-time best. Brandon (Stryganek) fought and battled his way into the next round. This is such a great experience for him."
The trio of Riley, Azie and Stryganek all moved into Friday's quarterfinals race. Riley clocked a time of 10.19 with the seventh-fastest mark overall and the second-fastest in the school record books. Teammate Azie timed a season-best 10.24 in heat number four to record the eighth-fastest mark while Stryganek ran a time of 10.52, just off his personal-best, to finish third in his heat and 18th overall.
Senior Graham Farnsworth (3:55.25) also closed out his season in the 1,500m while freshman DJ Zahn (47.81) ended the year in the 400m. Also running their final races this season were sophomore Ryan Lynn (1:52.22) and freshman Joe McAsey (1:51.91) in the 800m.
"Overall we were hoping for a little more, maybe a surprise qualifier advancing, but it didn't happen," Turk said. "However the guys that we really needed to advance did just that. With all the events and athletes we have left, we are in good shape."
