DES MOINES, Iowa - Senior Andrew Riley advanced to the finals of the 110m hurdles and will be the lead runner in the 4x100m relay final tomorrow at the Penn Relays. Also moving into the finals is senior Stanley Aziewho won his heat in the 100m and placed fifth overall. The Illini also wrapped up day two at the Drake Relays.
"I'm very pleased with our performances at the Penn Relays today," head coach Mike Turksaid. "The 4x100 relay is really coming together and they are in the hunt. It's great because we'll see most of those teams at NCAAs. Stanley (Azie) and Andrew (Riley) also ran very well in the prelims of their events and are well poised for the finals."
The 4x100m team of Riley, Brandon Stryganek, Josh Zinzerand Azie started the Illini off with a bang, as the four recorded the fastest prelims time with 39.94, the only team which ran under 40 seconds. The group will compete in the finals of the event tomorrow at 12:50 p.m. CT. Later in the day, Riley edges Barrett Nugent of LSU to post the fastest 110m hurdles prelim time of 13.63 and advance to the championship final tomorrow afternoon. Azie will also compete in the 100m dash final tomorrow after winning his prelims heat with a time of 10.46 and placing fifth overall.
At Drake, freshman Davis Fraker finished the highest for the Illini at the Drake Relays as he placed 10th in the shot put with a mark of 55-5 ½ (16.90m) while sophomore Matt Bane took 11th in the pole vault with a jump of 16-4 ¾ (5.00m). The 4x800m relay team of Zebo Zebe, Malcolm Taylor, Ryan Lynn, Joe McAsey, wrapped up competition on Saturday, finishing 12th in a time of 7:35.38.
"We had a tough day at Drake," Turk said. "I am pleased with our efforts though. The weather was a factor especially for the pole vault and long jump. It's the only time we've had adverse conditions this year and I'm glad we fought through it. We're likely to see poor conditions at Big Tens, so this is a good experience for the guys. The 4x800 ran well against a very strong field. The weather especially the wind, kept us from running the kind of time we were hoping for but the head to head place was solid."
Freshman Brandon Noe starts the competition for the Illini at Drake on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT with the sprint medley group of sophomore Jade Ackerman, freshman D.J. Zahn, and sophomore's Ryan Lynn and Zebo Zebe will follow at 10:35 a.m. Senior Chris DeSilva will open up in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time this season while a trio of field event competitors begin at 11:45 with freshman Branden Tanthavong in the triple jump and school record holder Davis Fraker and sophomore Brett Ramirez in the hammer throw beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT. Senior Nic Haabwill look to improve his time in the 400m hurdles while the finals of the 110m hurdles starts at 3:16 p.m. CT will conclude the event for the Orange and Blue.
