Senior Colin Mickow won the 10,000m title on Thursday night at the Drake Relays.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Senior Colin Mickow highlighted the first day of competition at the Drake Relays for the Fighting Illini men's track and field team as he won the 10,000m title. Colin won the race with a time of 29:48.72, while his twin brother Hunter Mickowwon the 10K race at the 2010 Drake Relays, marking two titles in the event by brothers in the last two years.
"Colin (Mickow) had a great run tonight," distance coach Gavin Kennedysaid. "He took the lead with a mile to go and never gave it up. To have both Mickow brothers win a Drake Relay 10K title is very special. This was a nice step in the right direction before the Big Ten Championships."
"It's a nice feeling," Mickow said. "It is the first Drake Relays race I've won. I was second a couple of years ago in the 5000 meters, so I definitely had to win this one."
The Drake Relays continue on Friday morning at 11:35 a.m. CT with freshman Gary Ford in the 110m hurdles while sophomore's Matthew Bane and Cody Klein will look to improve their pole vault marks. Sophomore Ryan Lankford opens his outdoor season this weekend in the long jump and freshman Davis Fraker will compete in the shot put. At 8:05 p.m. CT, the 4x800 final of junior Malcolm Taylor, sophomore Zebo Zebe, sophomore Ryan Lynn and freshman Joe McAseywill put the finishing touches on Friday's competition.
Freshman Brandon Noe starts the competition for the Illini on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT with the sprint medley group of sophomore Jade Ackerman, freshman D.J. Zahn, and sophomore's Ryan Lynn and Zebo Zebe will follow at 10:35 a.m. Senior Chris DeSilva will open up in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time this season while a trio of field event competitors begin at 11:45 with freshman Branden Tanthavong in the triple jump and school record holder Davis Fraker and sophomore Brett Ramirez in the hammer throw beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT. Senior Nic Haabwill look to improve his time in the 400m hurdles while the finals of the 110m hurdles starts at 3:16 p.m. CT will conclude the event for the Orange and Blue.
Starting tomorrow, the 4x100m relay team of senior Andrew Riley, freshman Brandon Stryganek, junior Josh Zinzer and senior Stanley Azieare four Illini who are competing at Franklin Field for the 118th Penn Relays. Reigning Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week Riley will also run the 110m hurdles, an event in which the senior owns the nations top time, while Azie will step to the line and compete in the 100m dash.
