FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Sophomore All-American Andrew Riley tied the school record in the preliminaries of the 60m dash at the Tyson Invitational, running a time of 6.72 at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The Kingston, Jamaica, native matched the record set by Dominique Worsley in 2008 and placed seventh overall in the event after running a 6.82 in the finals. Riley, who also holds the 60m hurdles school record, took sixth overall in that event, improving his provisional qualifying time with a season-best 7.86.
"Riley was the highlight of the event and keeps getting better with each week," interim head coach Mike Turk said. "We made progress this weekend, even if it wasn't as dramatic as past meets, so overall it was pretty good."
Four other Illini competed at the Tyson Invite, which is held at the same site as the NCAA Championships. Senior Greg Shroka was hampered by a tight quad, but battled through it to place 11th in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 ¾. Junior Matt McHugh placed 14th in the weight throw with a mark of 57-3 (17.45m), while fellow junior Oz Lifshitz finished 14th in the triple jump with a bound of 47-6 ½ (14.49). Sophomore Stanley Azie was the final Illini competitor, running a 7.06 in the 60m dash and a 21.86 in the 200m.
The majority of the Illini squad competed at the Iowa State Classic, which will wrap up late Saturday night. Full results and a recap can be found on fightingillini.com.
Next week, Illinois competes at the EIU Friday Night Special on Feb. 19 in Charleston, Ill., before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., the following week (Feb. 27-28) for the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
