Sterling Roberts comes to Illinois after serving as an assistant coach at Defiance College for two years, where he worked with jumpers, hurdlers, and sprinters. At Illinois, Roberts will take a similar role as the volunteer sprints and hurdles coach.
While at Defiance College, Roberts had six All-HCAC athletes and five All-HCAC Champions. He also guided two athletes to HCAC Female Freshman of the Year awards, and one athlete to a HCAC Male Field Athlete of the Meet award. He was also published in the August 2011 issue of Techniques magazine.
Roberts attended Eastern Michigan University, where he had an impressive track career. He was a four-year varsity letter winner as a sprinter and hurdler, and specialized in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. He was a two-time All-MAC athlete (2001, 2002) and a MAC Champion in the 1600-meter relay in 2002.
Academically, he was named an Eastern Michigan and MAC Scholar Athlete, and was a recipient of the MAC Presidential Award. Roberts graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and teaching, and minors in mathematics and Spanish.
