Two Illini Chosen To Academic All-District V Team

    March 23, 2000

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two Illinois student-athletes have been named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District V team announced today. Cross country standout Scott McClennan (Sr., St. Catherines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and gymnast Travis Romagnoli (Sr., Aurora, Ontario/Cardinal Carter) were named to the Fall/Winter at-large team. Their names will now be put on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.

McClennan, Illinois' top harrier for three seasons, carries a 3.51 GPA in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. He earned All-Region honors for the third consecutive year last fall with a 14th place finish at the 1999 NCAA regionals. McClennan carried a string of eight consecutive races over his junior and senior seasons as Illinois' top scoring runner. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and two-time George Huff Award winner. McClennan is preparing for the outdoor track season, which begins this weekend (Mar. 25) at Southern Illinois.

Romagnoli, the 1998 NCAA national champion in all-around and vault, has a 3.38 GPA in bio engineering. He is a seven time NCAA All-American who is currently ranked first in the nation on high bar. The 1998 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year had a season-ending injury prior to last year's Big Ten championships, keeping him out of national consideration in 1999. Romagnoli is a two-time GTE Academic All-American and two-time GymInfo Scholar All-American, as well as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He will be in action March 30-April 1, as Illinois competes at the NCAA Championships.

In addition, Illinois had two athletes selected to the Academic All-District second team in gymnast Leo Oka (Jr., Scarborough, Ontario/Thornlea) and swimmer Emily Wang (Sr., Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville). Oka has a 3.53 GPA in business administration while Wang carries a 3.97 GPA in architecture.
