Men Fifth at District V Meet McClennan Finishes 22nd Overall; Earns All-Region Honors - 11/14/98
The University of Illinois men's cross country team finished fifth in the NCAA District V Cross Country Meet this afternoon at Wichita State University. Oklahoma State took home the title with 42 points and was followed by Iowa (81), Minnesota (100), Missouri (126) and Illinois (221). Oklahoma State and Iowa earned the automatic bids into the NCAA Championships with their finish.
Illinois' top finisher was junior Scott McClennan, who was 22nd overall in a time of 31:47.30. The finish earns his All-Region honors for the second season in a row. Senior Cortney Lamb finished up his career with a 27th place finish in 31:53.30. The top two were followed by Mike Lucchesi (55th/32:41.00), Ryan Eason (60th/32:50.50), Chas Berckman (62nd/32:57.20) and Jason Van Swol (66th/33:00.40). Jon Russell did not finish.
"The guys did a super job," Illinois Head Coach Gary Wieneke said. "We finished on a high note, and accomplished our goals of being the best in Illinois and coming in better than the Big Ten meet. I think we served notice for next year when the District Meet will be held in Champaign."
Illinois' 1998 campaign is over, but the 1999 squad will return all runners with the exception of Lamb.
