Men Finish 8th at Big Ten's

McClennan Finishes 22nd Overall - 11/1/98

The University of Illinois men's cross country team finished eighth at the 1998 Big Ten Cross Country Championships held this afternoon on the campus of the University of Michigan. Michigan (50) won the championship, followed by Michigan State in second (64) and Wisconsin third (70). Illinois finished wiht 192 total points.

Individually, junior Scott McClennan once again paced the Illini, coming in 22nd overall in a time of 25:30 over the 8,000m course. McClennan has been Illinois' top finisher in four of five meets in 1998.

Coming in behind McClennan was senior Cortney Lamb, who was 35th in 25:47. Rounding out the top seven for Illinois were: Jon Russell (39th/25:51), Jason VonSwol (42nd/25:54), Chas Berckman (54th/26:18), Ryan Eason (55th/26:21) and Mike Lucchesi (58th/26:28).

Wisconsin's Matt Downin won the individual championship in a time of 24:06 and was followed by Michigan State's Ryan Taylor (24:23). Illinois next competes at the NCAA District V Meet, scheduled for No. 14 at Wichita State University. The District meet serves as both the team and individual NCAA-qualifying meet.
