Men's Cross Country
Harriers Win Illini Invite

Team places five runners in top eight for dominating victory - 9/26/98

The University of Illinois men's and women's cross country teams hosted their only home meet of the season tonight at the Orange and Blue Golf Course, as the men placed five runners in the top eight for a dominating win while the women finished fourth.

The Fighting Illini men's harriers won the 10K race with 29 points, as junior Scott McClennan (Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill) led the way with a third-place finish in a time of 31:57.89. The key to the race was Illinois' ability to stick together, as four Illini finished from 5th to 8th place with Jon Russell (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) at 32:20.21, Cortney Lamb (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) in 32:32.36, Charles Berckmann in 32:34.22 and Mike Lucchesi (Elmhurst, Ill./York) at 32:35.50.

Two runners from Lindenwood University crossed the finish line first, as Sharife Karle won the race in a time of 31:36.32. Lindenwood placed second with 42 points, followed by Indiana State (53), Cincinnati (111), Wisconsin-Green Bay (178) and DePaul (181).

The Fighting Illini men's team returns to action next weekend as they head to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Saluki Invitational on October 3 while the women's harriers take a week off before running in the Purdue Invitational on October 9.
