Harriers Open Season at Illinois State - 9/11/98

The University of Illinois men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons at the Illinois State Invitational this afternoon at the Illinois State University Golf Course. Both teams placed fourth overall, the men finishing with 92 points and the women with 80. Wisconsin (34) won the men's race and Illinois State (44) took the honors for the women.

Sophomore Mike Lucchesi led the charge for the men, taking 11th in a time of 25:19 over the 8K course. Junior Scott McClennan was 14th in 25:29 and junior Jon Russell was 16th in 25:34.

"We had some pretty good individual performances, but as a team we did not execute as well as we should have," men's head coach Gary Wieneke said. "The individual effort was very good. We had hoped for a better start to the season, but there were positive signs. This was a good solid start and we will build from here.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, the men in the 26th annual Alumni Meet, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the outdoor track, and the women at Parkland College.
