BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Illinois men's cross country team ran at the Sam Bell Invitational on the campus of Indiana University this afternoon. The team continued its impressive performance, finishing 4th overall in the 22-team field. This was a major meet that included two teams ranked in the top 25 (North Carolina State and Tennessee), and three others (Navy, South Florida, and Eastern Michigan) which received votes nationally.
Illinois finished with 162 points, while the winning school, fourth-ranked NC State, won the meet with a score of 19 points. Individually, senior Scott McClennan (Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill High School) led the Illini by finishing 9th overall in a time of 25:13.4. Senior Jon Russell (Crystal Lake, Ill./ Central High School) was second for the team and 21th overall, with an inspired performance good for a time of 25:42.8.
"This was a good, solid performance by our team today," head coach Gary Wieneke said. "This showed that we have made great progress in big meet situations. Our effort and improvement keeps continuing in the right direction."
Ryan Eason (25:50.4), Mike Lucchesi (26:11.0) and Dan Horyn (26:20.5) rounded out Illinois' scoring five.
After winning the Illinois Invitational and racing well today, the Illini look to ride that wave of success into their next meet, when the school hosts the pre-regional at the UI Blue Golf Course in Savoy, next Saturday October 2. Then men will race at 10 am.
