Sept. 9, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.--The Fighting Illini men's cross country team started off the season this morning in the five team Murray Keating Memorial Championship hosted by Purdue University. Illinois finished fourth with 93 points. Arizona won the competition with 19 points. All five of the Wildcats scored runners placed among the top six.

Leading the pack for the Illini was junior Caleb Grinter. He finished 14th in the 8,000 meter run in a time of 26:34.20. Seconds behind Grinter was teammate Mike Lucchesi. The senior finished 17th with a time of 26:46.50. Fellow senior Dan Horyn was 19th with a time of 26:52.70.

Head Coach Gary Wieneke was impressed with the performances turned in by the newcomers. Freshmen Tim Seiwert and Adam Palumbo rounded out the scoring five for the Illini. Seiwert took 20th place in a time of 26:59.00. Palumbo came in 24th after finishing the race in 27:07.50.

"The freshmen ran very well in their first competition," Wieneke said. "But overall, we've got to figure out how to compete better. First competitions can be ugly, and it was."
