Andy Derks enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Fighting Illini. A Rochester, Ill., native, Derks won the IHSA Class A 1600m run in 1998. He competed in cross country and track and field at Eastern Illinois University.
In cross country, Derks was a member of two Ohio Valley Conference Championship teams in 2000 & 2001, Derks earning firs team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors both of these years, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. He rounded out his cross country career at EIU, with an 8K personal best time of 25:32.
In track, Derks was a member of seven Ohio Valley Conference Championship teams, including three indoor and four outdoor titles. In indoors, Derks was a member of the winning distance medley relays in 2000, 2001 and 2003. His junior year, in outdoors, he placed second in the 1500m run, at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships and went on to win the 1500m his senior year with a career best time of 3:55.08.
Derks graduated from Eastern Illinois in 2003 with a degree in physical education. He later went on to earn his master's degree in physical education, with a focus in athletic administration.
Derks served as the head boys and girls cross country coach and head boys track coach at St. Joseph-Odgen High School from 2004-06. He has competed in seven marathons, with his personal best, 2:26.12, coming at the 2007 Green Bay marathon.
