PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Illinois redshirt-freshman 184-pounder Tony Dallago was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Dallago upset No. 8 A.J. Kissel with a pin in 2:59 to give No. 9 Illinois a lead it would never relinquish in a 26-15 dual win over No. 15 Purdue at Huff Hall on Sunday. It is Dallago's second win over a higher-ranked foe this year and the second Wrestler of the Week honor by an Illini this season after Kyle Dooley earned the award on Nov. 16.
Dallago showed how dangerous he is even when trailing in a match, as Kissel scored a takedown 1:56 into the bout and almost got a near-fall, but Dallago flipped over him for a reversal, locked on a headlock with the first-period clock winding down and pinned Kissel with one second remaining in the period. It was Dallago's first career win over a Top-10 opponent and he improves to 11-5 on the year with six of those wins coming by fall.
