Adam Tirapelle (149 pounds) was one of five wrestler to advance unscathed to the semi-finals round in the Las Vegas Invitational.

LAS VEGAS - The fifth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team used a strong team showing to extend a two-point advantage after the first and second rounds of competition at the 19th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational to a 13.50 lead over second place Nebraska heading into Saturdayâs action. Saturdayâs competiton starts at noon with the finals set to start at 7 p.m.
Illinois started strong in the tournament with seven wrestlers picking up wins in the pigtail round, then added a perfect first round to start the tournament with a 17-0 record. Round Two didnât go quite as smoothly with the Illini dropping four of their first five matches, but wins in the last five weights helped Illinois advance six wrestlers into the quarterfinals, the most of any school in the tournament. The Orange and Blue then advanced five wrestlers into the semifinals to extend the lead to nearly 15 points.
Adam Tirapelle (149 pounds), Matt Lackey (165), Ben King (174), Nate Patrick (184) and Pat Quirk (197) all advanced unscathed and have dates in the semifinals. John Lockhart (Hwt) was the lone Illini to drop into the consolation round from the quarterfinals and will join Ryan Escobar (125), Mike Castillo (141) and Ryan Berger (157) who each lost second round matches. Kelly Madden (133) is the lone Illini eliminated from further competition. Complete individual results follow.
