PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Illinois senior Daryl Thomas was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Thomas earns the first honor of his career after going undefeated and defeating two top-20 opponents last Saturday at the Journeyman Duals.
The No. 16 133-pounder had a great weekend, recording a technical fall and a decision, giving the Illini eight total points. The Edwardsville, Ill., native helped lead the Illini over No. 16 Maryland (31-6) and Princeton (46-0). He earned a 22-7 tech fall in 5:45 over No. 14 Garrett Grey of Princeton before taking down No. 15 Geoffrey Alexander of Maryland (7-3).
The last Illini to win the honor was Tony Dallago earlier this season on Nov. 6. Illinois is the only school who has won multiple conference wrestler of the week honors so far this year.
The Fighting Illini squad takes the weekend off but is on the road again to Cedar Falls, Iowa next Saturday, Dec. 8 to compete in the Northern Iowa Open.
