The fifth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team will compete at the Missouri Open in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse in Columbia, Mo., on Sunday, November 19. There will be over 20 teams competing including several teams ranked in Intermat's top 25. No. 3 Iowa State, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 21 Wisconsin, No. 23 Purdue and No. 24 Indiana will join the Illini in a field that also includes Eastern Illinois, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Neosho, Minnesota State-Mankato, Cumberland, Lindenwood, Missouri Valley, Central Missouri, Meramac, Missouri. Baptist, Southern Illinois, Lincoln, and more. The Open is set start at 10 a.m. and will last all day.
Illinois will travel all healthy wrestlers which will compete in two division, a freshman/sophomore division and the upper-class open division.
Illini Approaching Milestones: Adam Tirapelle, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 149 pounds, notched his 97th career win last Friday night against Missouri and with his next win will tie volunteer assistant coach and last year's 141-pound NCAA champion Carl Perry's career total of 98 victories. Next in line for Tirapelle is Jon Llewellyn's total of 106.
Tirapelle also has 23 career pins and needs three more falls to tie Larry TenPas for second on the Illini's all-time career pins chart with 26 falls.
Mark Johnson notched his 93rd dual victory with Illinois in the 33-6 win over Missouri last Friday. He now only needs two more dual wins to tie H.E. Kenney for second on the Illini's all-time career coaching wins list. B.R. Patterson heads the list with 100 career victories.
