CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois' most current national champion is also its newest coach. Carl Perry, the 2000 141-pound NCAA champion, will serve as a student assistant this season.

Perry was seeded eighth at last year's NCAA championship and went on to post wins over No. 1 Doug Schwab of Iowa, No. 4 Mark Angle of Clarion and No. 2 Michael Lightner of Oklahoma in the finals to claim the title. He finished his Illini wrestling career ranked seventh on the Illini career wins list with 98 victories and 10th on the career pins list with 11.

Perry, a two-time All-American, was a four-year starter for Illinois competing at 126 pounds in 1997 and 1998, then at 141 pounds in 1999 and 2000. He will complete his degree in sports management this spring.
