CHAMPAIGN, IL. - University of Illinois wrestler Matt Lackey went 1-1 in pool competition and dropped out of medal contention at the FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships held July 3-9 in Nantes, France.
Lackey, a redshirt freshman who earned his first Illini varsity letter this past season, earned a 13-1 technical fall over Jose Carrasco of Spain in his opener in the 167.5-pound division. Lackey then lost 4-1 to Russia's Mourad Gaidarov.
The FILA Junior age-group was formerly known as the Espoir Division. FILA, the Internatioinal Governing Body, changed the name of the age-group three years ago. These athletes are between 17 and 20 years old, and include college underclassmen, military athletes and high school wrestling stars who will be competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, the Olympic styles of the sport.
