Illinois Wrestling Program Adds Recruits

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois head wrestling coach Mark Johnson announced today the signing of five prep wrestlers which will join fall signees Mark Jayne and Paul Collum to extend the 1999-2000 recruiting class to seven athletes which will join Johnson's nationally-ranked squad next fall.
Bill Blum (Oglesby, IL, LaSalle-Peru H.S.), Brian Glynn (Tinley Park, IL, Providence Catholic H.S.), Eric Novak (Tinley Park, IL, Andrew H.S.), Matt Weight (Batavia, IL, Batavia H.S.) and Jason Vincens (Wheaton, IL, Wheaton North H.S.) each signed national letters of intent and will wear the Orange and Blue next season.
"On paper, this is the best and deepest recruiting class I've had since coming to Illinois," Johnson said.
The group includes four state champions and several wrestlers which are ranked nationally. Jayne and Collum have the most impressive credentials. Jayne was a three-time Ohio State champion, junior national greco-roman national champion and finished third at the junior nationals in freestyle competition. He has been ranked in the top six nationally at 125 pounds all season. Collum is a two-time Illinois state champion, a cadet national champion and is currently the No. 1 ranked senior in the nation at 135 pounds.
Blum, who attended the same high school as Illinois NCAA champion Eric Siebert, was the Illinois state runner-up in 1999 and finished third this past season. Glynn, who is currently ranked No. 9 nationally at 171 pounds, placed second at the Illinois state meet and fourth at the National High School Championships. Novak was the 2000 Illinois state champion at 140 pounds and is currently ranked third in the nation. Weight, a heavyweight, is ranked No. 4 in the nation after a second-place finish at the Illinois state meet and a third-place showing at the National High School Championships. Vincens placed sixth at 189 pounds at the Illinois state meet in 1999 and earned the state title last season.
As a group, the seven have an average test score of 26 on the ACT and have an average GPA of 3.54.
