CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois will send 14 wrestlers to Akron, Ohio this weekend to compete in the ASICS Men's FILA Cadet and University National Championships. The Illini will kick-off competition in the tournament, which is hosted by the University of Akron, on Saturday, April 21 with finals taking place on Sunday, April 22 at the Athletics Field House.
All-American Mike Poeta, who will wrestle in the 154 weight-division, leads 14 Illinois wrestlers who will compete unattached. Other Illini starters Jimmy Kennedy (138), Patrick Bond (211) and John Wise (264) will compete as well with several non-starters from the squad.
The competition, which brings together the top collegiate-level talent from around the country is comprised of a FILA Cadet Division as well as a University Division, in which all Illinois grapplers will compete. Both divisions will be wrestled both in Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Finalists in each division qualify for the 2007 Senior World Team Trials held in Las Vegas, Nev., June 8-10. This event also is a qualifier for an international tour with USA Wrestling's National Development coaches.
