April 7, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Big Ten conference has announced the University of Illinois' opponents for the 2014-15 wrestling season. The Illini will wrestle nine Big Ten schools next season, including four at Huff Hall.
The Illini will face four conference foes at home next season, including new additions Maryland and Rutgers. Illinois and Maryland have met twice in program history, with the Illini ahead in the series 2-0. The most recent matchup took place in November of 2012 at the Journeymen Duals, with the Orange & Blue claiming the 31-6 victory. The meeting between Illinois and Rutgers will be the first-ever between the two programs.
Illinois will also welcome Nebraska and Wisconsin to Huff Hall next season. Nebraska leads the all-time series against the Illini 4-3 after winning the most recent matchup, a 22-13 victory in Champaign on Feb. 1. Illinois dropped an 18-19 dual in Madison on Dec. 6, but leads Wisconsin 39-27-3 in the all-time series.
The Illini will face five Big Ten opponents on the road, including in-state rival Northwestern. The Orange & Blue won the most recent matchup, a 24-12 victory in Champaign on Feb. 10, improving their overall record against the Wildcats to 44-32-2. The Illini will travel to Purdue for the second straight year after claiming an 18-16 victory in West Lafayette on Feb. 7, and will face Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
Illinois will wrestle nine conference opponents each year. The teams will rotate annually with the exception of Northwestern, who the Illini will face every year.
