Two Illini Advance to Semifinals at B1G Championships

MADISON, Wis. - The Fighting Illini wrestling team advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals after one session of the 2014 Big Ten Championships. No. 2 Jesse Delgado (125) and No. 5 Jackson Morse (165) will wrestle in the semifinals of the championship bracket, while Illinois' remaining eight wrestlers are alive in the consolation bracket. The Illini are currently in eighth place with 21.5 points, just behind seventh-place Ohio State (23.5) and sixth-place Wisconsin (26.0)
After receiving a first-round bye, Delgado defeated No. 7 Camden Eppert of Purdue in a 9-2 decision in the second round. He will square off against No. 3 Cory Clark of Iowa for the first time this season in the semifinals. No. 5 Jackson Morse started the day with a 5-0 decision over No. 12 Ben Cox in the first round. He then went on to upset No. 4 Dan Yates 8-5 in the second round to move on to the semifinals, where he will take on top-seeded David Taylor of Penn State for the second time this season. Taylor claimed an 11-3 major decision victory over Morse back in January.
No. 5 Zane Richards (133), No. 7 Steven Rodrigues (141) and No. 7 Zac Brunson (157) won their first matchups of the day, but were defeated in the second round to move to the consolation bracket. No. 6 Mario Gonzalez (197) won his first-round matchup but will move to consolation after a second-round injury default. After receiving first-round byes, No. 5 Tony Dallago (174) and No. 8 Nikko Reyes (184) dropped their second-round bouts, while Caleb Ervin (149) and No. 12 Christopher Lopez (HWT) lost their first-round matchups.
The second session of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships will begin at 5:00 p.m. CT and will feature the semifinals of the championship bracket, as well as two rounds of consolation matches.
