2009 Big Ten Championships Brackets ![]()
Brackets for the 2009 Big Ten Championships were announced Friday, with all of the preliminary seeds remaining the same after the Big Ten coaches' meeting. No. 2 Mike Poeta is the top seed at 157 pounds, while No. 3 Jimmy Kennedy is the No. 3 seed at 133. No. 8 John Wise (HWT), No. 12 Jordan Blanton (184) and No. 15 Roger Smith-Bergsrud (165) also earned the No. 4 seed at their respective weight classes.
In addition, John Dergo (174) and Patrick Bond (197) earned the No. 5 seed in their classes, Ryan Prater is the No. 7 seed at 141 and B.J. Futrell (125) and Eric Terrazas (149) grabbed No. 8 seeds.
Futrell, Kennedy and Wise received pigtail matches through a computerized draw, with Futrell facing Michigan State's Eric Olanowski, Kennedy squaring off against Wisconsin's Tom Kelliher and Wise taking on Penn State's Cameron Wade. Futrell defeated Olanowski, 9-7, in the final dual of the regular season, while Kennedy has pinned Kelliher twice this season. Wise has never faced Wade as the Illini didn't wrestle Penn State in a dual this year.
Action begins Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT) in the Bryce Jordan Center with pigtail matches and quarterfinal bouts. The second session of the championships will begin at 5 p.m. and the first two rounds of consolation matches and semifinal bouts will take place during that session. On Sunday, the consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches will begin at 11 a.m., and the championship, third-place and fifth-place bouts will take place at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Live updates will be available here, while FightingIllini.com will have results after each round of action.
