PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Jimmy Kennedy (133) and Mike Poeta (157) earned No. 1 preliminary seeds for this weekend's Big Ten Championships as determined by the conference coaches, the Big Ten announced Monday. Kennedy's pre-seed is his first No. 1 seed at Big Tens, while Poeta's is his second after also being the top pre-seed in 2007. The duo lead 10 Illini who garnered preliminary seeds for the championships, making Illinois one of just four Big Ten schools to have all 10 starters pre-seeded.
Patrick Bond, ranked 11th nationally, garnered a No. 3 seed at 197, while Gabe Flores (125), Roger Smith-Bergsrud (165), John Dergo (174) and John Wise (HWT) all earned No. 5 seeds. Redshirt-freshman Ben Friedl grabbed the No. 7 seed at 184, while true-freshmen Ryan Prater (141) and Grant Paswall (149) each took No. 8 seeds.
The Big Ten Championships begin Saturday, March 8, at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Official brackets will be announced on Friday, March 7.
