#15 Illini Host SIUE, #5 Gophers
No. 15 Illinois hosts SIU Edwardsville and the fifth-ranked Minnesota Gophers this weekend, with the Cougars coming to Huff Hall Friday at 7 p.m. and Minnesota invading Huff Sunday at 1 p.m. The Illini hammered SIUE 48-0 last year and dropped a 27-13 dual to fifth-ranked Minnesota a season ago.
SIUE is in just its second year as a Division I wrestling team and is having nearly as tough of a season as last year. The Cougars are 2-11 so far this season with wins over South Dakota State and Gardner-Webb. SIUE also has taken its lumps against Coe, Cornell College, Iowa Central, Findlay, Northwestern, Iowa, Cleveland State, Indiana, Chattanooga and Missouri. SIUE lost its duals against the three Big Ten schools and Missouri by a combined 193-0.
Minnesota is on the other end of the spectrum from SIUE, holding a 10-3 record on the season. The Gophers most recently defeated Indiana, 25-14, last Friday, and No. 13 Iowa State, 26-13, on Sunday. Minnesota also has defeated Appalachian State, No. 9 Central Michigan, North Dakota State, Nebraska, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Northern Illinois and No. 6 Boise State. The Gophers have dropped duals to No. 2 Oklahoma State, 17-16, No. 1 Cornell, 20-16, and No. 4 Wisconsin, 19-17.
This Weekend's Promotions
Friday's dual will serve as "Orange Krush point night," where Orange Krush members can earn a point toward future road trips for men's basketball games. It also will be Boy Scout Night, with boy scouts being able to purchase concession coupons for $4 by contacting Assistant Marketing Director Elizabeth Klatt at 217.333.6969. Illini wrestlers also will sign autographs following the dual. Sunday is Camper Reunion Day.
Series History Against SIUE
Illinois is 15-8-1 all-time against SIUE and has won 11 consecutive meetings since 1993. SIUE has scored 38 total points in those 11 meetings, including three shutouts.
Series History Against Minnesota
Minnesota holds a 27-23-2 all-time series lead over the Illini, including a 12-3 advantage since 1993. The Gophers also have won 10 consecutive duals at Huff Hall, stretching back to 1964.
Matchups to Watch
While Illinois wrestlers will be heavily favored at every weight class against SIU Edwardsville on Friday, there are a handful of interesting matchups in the dual against No. 5 Minnesota on Sunday. Here's a look at a few key bouts:
#15 Illinois vs. #5 Minnesota
197: TBD (ILL) vs. Joe Nord (MINN)
In a battle full of unknowns, it remains to be seen who the starter will be for the Illini at 197. After Mario Gonzalez suffered a knee injury at Northwestern on Jan. 14, Illinois was left with a hole in its lineup and no immediate back-up. Senior Joe Barczak wrestled at 197 in Illinois' dual against Purdue on Dec. 19, dropping an 11-2 major decision. Barczak had previously competed in open tournaments at 184 earlier this season. Redshirt-freshman Tony Dallago, Illinois' regular starter at 184, bumped up to 197 on Jan. 16 against Wisconsin and dropped an 8-3 decision to Derrick Borlie.
149: #14 Eric Terrazas (ILL) vs. Danny Zilverberg (MINN)
Terrazas has lost the last two matches that he has wrestled - not counting a forfeit he accepted in the Wisconsin dual - after winning eight straight bouts to take third place at Midlands. Zilverberg is 13-8 after splitting a pair of matches last weekend, defeating Iowa State's Max Mayfield and falling to Indiana's No. 15 Kurt Kinser. The pair have never met in a college match.
