NCAA Championships Day One Results

Illini Wrestlers Advance at NCAA's

Six of nine Illini advanced in the championship bracket into the second round today at the 1999 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Illinois' four seeded wrestlers all advanced. They are No. 8 Carl Perry (141 pounds), No. 7 Adam Tirapelle (149), No. 10 Pat Quirk (197) and No. 5 Karl Roesler (Hwt.). Bill Zeman (165) and Nate Patrick (184) were the two unseeded Illini to move onto the second round. Patrick defeated unseeded Corey Bell of North Carolina in sudden death. Zeman received a first-round bye when 12th-seeded Rangi Smart of BYU did not wrestle due to injury. The three Illini who lost all fell to seeded opponents. All second round matches and the first two round of wrestlebacks will be held tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. est.
