Illini Rebound with Win Over Badgers
The University of Illinois wrestling team ended a two match losing streak by defeating the Wisconsin Badgers, 26-10, today in Madison. Illinois, ranked seventh in the nation, won seven of 10 matches to improve to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin falls to 3-10-1, 0-5. The win comes after the Illini were soundly defeated, 30-6, at No. 2 Minnesota Friday night.
"I thought this was a very solid meet for us," said UI head coach Mark Johnson. "Wisconsin has proven that they have some talented wrestlers and earlier this week won four matches versus (No. 3) Iowa. I wasn't happy with how we performed Friday at Minnesota, but today was a good rebound performance from us. We lost only three matches and two off those were extremely close."
Illinois won the first match of the day at heavyweight and never looked back. Freshman John Lockhart, a native of Mahomet, Ill., got the starting nod and decisioned Jason Pernat, 5-4, to improve to 23-6 on the year and gain his first career Big Ten dual meet victory.
Other Illini winners included Dave Stoltz at 133 pounds, Carl Perry at 141, Adam Tirapelle at 149, Griff Powell at 157, Nate Patrick at 184 and Pat Quirk at 197. Perry won by forfeit while Stoltz and Tirapelle each won by major decision.
This week, Illinois prepares for the last and biggest home series of the year. The Illini will host No. 11 Penn State Friday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. and will host No. 3 Iowa Sunday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be at Huff Hall.
