Minnesota Handles UI Grapplers
University of Illinois junior Carl Perry recorded Illinois' only win as second-ranked Minnesota defeated the Illini, 30-6, tonight in Minneapolis. Perry, ranked No. 6 at 141 pounds, pinned No. 11 Chad Erickson at the 0:32 mark to record Illinois' only six points. It is Perry's second pin on the year.
The Big Ten dual started at the 165-pound weight class, and Minnesota won the first seven matches to jump out to a 24-0 lead before Perry's pin. Three Gophers won by major decision, but none won by fall.
Minnesota has three No.1-ranked wrestlers, who all won. Brandon Eggum decisioned No. 16 Nate Patrick, 11-4, at 184. Tim Hartung won by major decision, 15-4, over No. 12 Pat Quirk. Chad Kraft won a tough match over unranked Griff Powell at 157, decisioning the Illini freshman, 3-0.
On the year, Minnesota improves to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten. Illinois falls to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the Conference. The Illini will wrestle at Wisconsin Sunday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m.
