Perry Leads Illinois Past No. 15 Northwestern
Illini junior, 141-pounder Carl Perry upset third-ranked Scott Schatzman to highlight Illinois' 31-10 win over Northwestern today at Huff Hall in front of 774 fans. Competing in the last match of the day, Perry (17-7), who is ranked eighth in the nation, used four takedowns to earn a 10-2 major decision over Schatzman, who came into the meet with a perfect 10-0 record.
"The meet really ended on a great note with Carl defeating the number three guy in the nation," said UI head coach Mark Johnson. "Carl wrestled well from the start and the crowd really got into the match. He scored a takedown in the final seconds which led to a major decision over a very good opponent."
Overall, No. 6 Illinois (8-0) won at seven of 10 weight classes. During the first match of the day at 149, UI sophomore Adam Tirapelle pinned Jon Friedstat at 1:07 into the match to give Illinois a lead which it would never relinquish. "We are a very balanced team but had yet to have a meet where everybody wrestled well at the same time until today," said Johnson. "We really were looking to have our first dominating performance of the year, and I think we did that today. Even the guys who lost, wrestled hard. I thought it was a very solid performance by us in front of the home fans."
