No. 7 Illini Win at Chattanooga
With a 37-7 dual meet win at Tennessee-Chattanooga this afternoon, the seventh-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team improves to 7-0 on the season. With three regular starters out of the lineup and two wrestlers moving up a weight, Illinois won matches at eight of 10 weight classes en route to the win. UI's two losses came to ranked wrestlers.
The Fighting Illini dominated the match. One Illini won by fall, two won by a technical fall and three won by a major decision. Senior heavyweight Karl Roesler recorded his team-leading seventh pin on the year, pinning A.J. Lyczkowski. Sophomore Mike Castillo, wrestling for Adam Tirapelle at 149 pounds, won by a technical fall, 17-2, over Beau Baker. The victory is Castillo's first dual meet win of the year. Junior Carl Perry also recorded a 17-2 technical fall over Mason Thornburg at 141 pounds. Junior Bill Zeman (165), sophomore Ben King (174), and sophomore Nate Patrick (197) all won by major decision. Patrick moved up from 184 pounds.
One Illini upset a higher-ranked opponent today. Junior Steve Doerrer, ranked 12th in the nation, won 11-6 over 11th-ranked Adrian Tramutola at 125 pounds.
"This was a very good win for us," said UI head coach Mark Johnson. "Several of our guys have been banged up or under the weather and, on paper, Chattanooga matches up with us pretty well. It again shows the kind of depth this team has to be able to win this decisively, on the road, without our number one lineup in there."
Illinois will begin a stretch of eight straight Big Ten dual meets next Sunday, Jan. 24, when the team hosts 13th-ranked Northwestern at 1 p.m. at Huff Hall.
