Illini Advance to Virginia Duals Semifinals
The seventh-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the 1999 Virginia Duals by winning two matches today in Hampton, Va. Illinois (4-0) is the top seed in the tournament and defeated North Carolina State, 32-6, in the first round, and Northern Iowa, 18-13, in the quarterfinals.
"In this type of bracketed tournament, the name of the game is just to advance," said UI head coach Mark Johnson. "We did enough to win both meets and stay in position to win the title. We are where we wanted to be after the first day."
Illinois' first round win over NC State was highlighted by two Illini pins. Sophomore 149-pounder Adam Tirapelle recorded his second pin of the season while senior heavyweight Karl Roesler recorded his team-leading fifth fall on the year. UI won eight of 10 matches against the Wolfpack.
During the quarterfinal win over Northern Iowa, six Illini earned decisions. They were Steve Doerrer at 125 pounds, Carl Perry at 141, Griff Powell at 157, Nate Patrick at 184, Pat Quirk at 197 and Roesler at heavyweight.
Four Illini were double winners on the day. Perry (125), Powell (157), Patrick (184) and Roesler (HWT) all went 2-0 on Friday.
"The four double winners looked good," said Johnson. "Carl Perry has wrestled especially well. He is from Chesapeake, Va., and I think he is really fired up to be wrestling back home."
The Virginia Duals ends Saturday. Illinois will compete against No. 21 Cornell in the semifinals at 2 p.m. est. The championship dual meet will be held at 7 p.m. est.
