UI Routs Mizzou in Season Opener
The University of Illinois wrestling team, ranked No.8 in the nation, opened the 1998-99 season tonight with a 33-3 win over Missouri. The dual meet was held at Granite City High School in Granite City, Ill.
"This was a great start for our program," said UI head coach Mark Johnson. "We really looked sharp for our first meet and competed well. I was pleased with the outcome."
Illinois won at nine of 10 weight classes, three of those by major decision. Leading the way was senior heavyweight Karl Roesler, who gained a 10-2 major decision over Chad Hertzog. Sophomore 149-pounder Adam Tirapelle also won 12-3 over Jeff Urban and junior 125-pounder Steve Doerrer recorded a 10-2 major decision over Jake Lapinsky.
Tonight was the first varsity match for three Illini. Freshman Dave Stoltz gained a 8-2 decision over Mark Bader at 133 popunds. Freshman Griff Powell decisioned Jesse Jordan, 9-3, at 157, and sophomore Nate Patrick won 10-8 over returning NCAA qualifier Jason Moore at 184.
"It was great for our newcomers to go out there and perform like they did," said Johnson. "They went out on the mat for the first time and didn't let the nerves get to them. All three of them wrestled hard, and I think it is just a sign of great things to come."
