Nov. 10, 2012
AMES, Iowa -- Redshirt-senior B.J. Futrell won his first 141 title of his career at the Harold NIchols Cyclone Open on Saturday. Twelve grapplers placed at the tournament, including 10 Illini finishing in the top-five in each of their weight classes.
"It was a pretty good effort," head coach Jim Heffernan said. "Most importantly we got a lot of matches in. We still need to become more disciplined in some areas but we will continue to get better and keep working"
Futrell went 5-0, starting out his day by defeating Gustavo Martinez of Grand View by a 17-5 major decision. Futrell then pinned Tyler Nation (IWCC) in 2:29 and then moved past Gunnar Wolfensperger (UNI) by a 10-4 decision to reach the final. Futrell defeated Brock Coutu (Neb-Kearney) in a fall in 29 seconds to capture the title.
Jeff Koepke (184) and Pat Walker (HWT) took second in their respective weight classes as Koepke fell to Shamous O-Grady (St. Cloud State) 6-3 in the championship bout while Walker was defeated by Eric Thompson (Grand View) 6-4 in the finals. Daryl Thomas (133) continued his success from last weekend's Loras Open and placed third in his bracket. Jordan Blanton (174) took third and defeated four of his opponents by pins while teammate Tony Dallago (184) also placed third at the Open.
The Fighting Illini will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 17 to compete in the Lindenwood Open in St. Charles, Mo.
