Delgado and Polz Advance to Quarterfinals at NCAAs

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Second-seeded Jesse Delgado (125), and No. 7 Conrad Polz (165) won their second round matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Thursday night. Three other remain alive in the consolation bracket. The Illini finish tied for 12th place with 11.5 points after the first day of competition. The third session begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
Delgado looked extremely dominate in his second round match on Thursday night. The All-American did not give up one takedown in his 20-5 tech fall against Brown's William Watterson. Delgado recorded eight takedowns, a three-point nearfall, and an escape to earn his victory and move into the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Delgado will face No. 7 Nathan Kraisser of North Carolina.
Polz went 2-0 during the Thursday matches as he defeated Iowa State's Michael Moreno by a score of 5-2 to move into tomorrow morning's championship quarterfinals. The Illini scored a takedown with around a minute into the match while Moreno escaped to make the score 2-1 after the first. Polz chose to be on top for the second period and Moreno notched another escape to tie the match at two. In the third, Polz earned an escape and a late takedown win the mach 5-2. Polz will face top-seed David Taylor of Penn State next.
At 174, Blanton dropped his first match of the day, as the senior lost to Iowa State's Tanner Weatherman by a score of 16-14. It was a match which was back and forth as Blanton scored the early two points, however Weatherman then scored an escape, two takedowns and nearfalls points. The Illini wrestler scored an escape and a late reversal to make the score 7-5 in the Cyclone's favor. Blanton started down in the second and escaped and scored a key takedown to take the 8-7 lead. However Weatherman scored six more points to take the 13-8 lead after the second period. In the final period, Weatherman escaped while Blanton scored two more takedowns to come within two points (14-12). The both exchanged another set of takedowns but it wasn't enough as the Cyclone moved past Blanton 16-14. Blanton will face No. 9 Nathanie Brown of Lehigh.
Both Dallago and Gonzalez advanced in the consolation bracket as Dallago defeated Lucas Sheridan of Indiana 8-2 while Gonzalez moved past Braden Atwood of Purdue 7-1. Both Illini grapplers won their matches with over three minutes of riding time. Dallago will face No. 9 Mathanie Brown of Lehigh while Gonzalez will wrestle Wisconsin's Jackson Hein in tomorrow's morning session.
Thomas was eliminated from his first national championships as he fell to Nick Wilcox of Bloomsburg, 8-0. The two were scoreless after the first period. In the second, Wilcox scored an escape, one takedown and two nearfall points to push the score to 5-0. In the third, Wilcox notched another takedown and the riding time point to move over Thomas.
At 149, Ervin was defeated by Josh Wilson of Utah Valley by a 2-1 decision. Wilson scored the first and only takedown of the match in the first period. The two were scoreless after the second period while Ervin escaped, however it wasn't enough as the Wolverine topped him 2-1.
