CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The sixth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team overpowered No. 15 Wisconsin 32-7 to improve to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten at Huff Hall in Champaign Friday night. The Illini won eight of the 10 matches and picked up two major decisons and a pin to go with five decisions. Wisconsin dropped to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
"This was a solid performance tonight against a top 20 team," head coach Mark Johnson said. "I was very happy with our performance."
The Badgers managed to bookend a pair of wins, picking up a win in the opening match at 165 pounds and in the finale at 157. No. 2 Don Pritzlaff of Wisconsin put the Badgers up 4-0 after the 157-pound match with a 10-0 win over No. 19 Bill Zeman. And No. 13 Cory Wallman of Wisconsin beat No. 12 Griff Powell 3-1 in overtime for the Badgers total of seven points. Other than that, it was all Illinois.
Ben King put the Illini in the lead with a forfeit win at 174 pounds to put Illinois up for good at 6-4. Nate Patrick followed with a major decision over Joe Terrill 12-2 and the Illini's Pat Quirk, ranked 11th in the country, defeated No. 13 Steve Alf of Wisconsin for the third time this season to extend the lead to 13-4.
John Lockhart (Hwt), Ryan Escobar (125) and Dave Stoltz (133) each picked up three team points with decisions before Carl Perry notched a 16-2 major decison for his 15th win of the season. With the win, Perry now has 87 career victories and moves past Kirk Azinger and Lindsey Durlacher for 10th place on the Illini's all-time career wins list. No. 2 Adam Tirapelle joined Perry in the assault on the records book. Tirapelle picked up his 12th pin of the season over P.J. Dowling of Wisconsin to give him his 20th career fall which ranks fifth all-time on the Illini's career pins list. His six points rounded out the scoring for the Illini give the home squad a 32-4 lead.
"Carl is wrestling as well as anyone," Johnson said. "And Adam tries to dominate and is a great leader by example."
The Illini will continue its current homestand with a dual against No. 12 Michigan State on February 6 at 1 p.m. at Huff Hall.
