No. 5 Illinois Wrestling Dominates No. 23 Indiana, 39-0 Mark Johnson earns 100th career victory as head coach of Illini.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The fifth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team defeated No. 23 Indiana University 39-0 Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall in Champaign in front 1,046 fans. With the win, Illini head coach Mark Johnson gained his 100th career win at Illinois, tying B.R. Patterson as the winningest coach in Illinois history.
Johnson, in his ninth season as the head coach at Illinois, moved to 100-24-1 for his Illini career. Patterson coached from 1951-68, a span of 18 seasons, and is in the recordbook with a mark of 100-113-12.
"I have always said the records will come with time," Johnson said. "I am also happy for Jim Heffernan and Steve Marianetti who have been with me for awhile. I am proud to have broken the record here and I look forward to adding to the mark as the years go on."
Adam Tirapelle, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, managed to share the spotlight on a day Johnson was putting his name on top of the recordbook. Tirapelle moved into a tie with Keith Healy on the Illini's all-time career pins list. Tirapelle pinned Gabe Cook on Indiana for career fall number 31.
"I was in the position to get another pin and it worked out," said Tirapelle. "I'm more excited about the way our team wrestled today than with the record, but I am proud of the record as well."
With today's victory, the Illini moved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten while the Hoosiers dropped to 10-2 and 1-1 in the conference. The Hoosiers still hold the advantage in the all-time series 40-36-1, but, including today's win, the Illini have won the last five duals.
Illini senior Nate Patrick controlled No. 5 Viktor Sveda in what may have been the feature match of the afternoon. Patrick, ranked No. 2 in the country, avenged an early season loss to Sveda to give the Illini momentum and a 6-0 lead. Patrick registered the first takedown of the match with 0:58 remaining in the first period and, after a Sveda escape, led 2-1 after one period. Patrick started down to start the second and earned a quick escape to extend the lead to 3-1. Patrick added two more takedowns and a 1:15 riding time advantage to win 8-4.
"I have lost to Sveda a couple times before so I was really glad to have gotten another chance at him today and gotten a victory," said Patrick. "The way the team came out today was great, and I'm glad we got the win."
"I was nervous about this team wrestling Indiana," said Johnson. "We recruited a lot of the same wrestlers as them in the past and we match up similarly, so I am extremely pleased about the outcome."
The next action for the Illini will be Friday, January 26, at Michigan State.
