Masheto Named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week
April 1, 2009
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois men's track and field senior Gakologelwang Masheto was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week in his first week of competition during the outdoor season, announced by the conference office today. The two-time All-American earned the honor after running two regional qualifying times at the Arizona State Invitational last weekend.
Masheto became the first Illini to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships, doing so by opening the season with a 400m time of 46.31 to finish runner-up at the ASU Invitational. His performance bettered the qualifying standard by over a second and was the third-fastest performance in the country last weekend. The Maun, Botswana native closed out the meet by anchoring the successful Illini 4x400m relay to a second-place finish and regional qualifying time of 3:08.38. That performance currently ranks fifth in the country and first in the Mideast region.
This is the second time Masheto has been named conference athlete of the week during the outdoor season. He also has earned the honor four times during indoor track and field.
Masheto and the rest of the Illini are in action this weekend at the Florida Relays and Eastern Illinois' Big Blue Classic.
