COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Matt McHugh got the Illinois men's track and field team on the board at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, placing sixth in the hammer throw to open up the Illini's weekend of competition at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. McHugh's throw of 190 feet, 4 inches (58.01m) nearly matched his school-record throw of 190-4 (58.02m) set earlier this season at the Illinois Invitational. His sixth-place finish scored three points toward the Illini's team total and was the best finish in his career at a conference championship. McHugh also hit the NCAA Regional Championships qualifying standard in the hammer throw for the third time this season. Purdue senior Ben Harpenau easily won the hammer throw with a mark of 211-01. Junior Casey Fonnesbeck also fared well in the hammer throw for the Orange and Blue, with a personal-best toss of 181-04 to place 14th overall. The Illini had three athletes compete in the final race of day one, the 10,000 meters. Freshman Hunter Mickow was the Orange and Blue's top finisher and the first freshman finisher in the race, placing 10th with a time of 31:12.72. Junior Jacob Nachel was 14th in 31:38.89, while freshman Jim Riddle took 19th. Minnesota's Hassan Mead won the 10,000m in a time of 30:03.21, edging out Michigan's Lex Williams for the title (30:03.89). Illinois action at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships resumes at 12:20 p.m. CT on Saturday with the long jump. Finals of the high jump, discus and 3,000m steeplechase will also be contested throughout the day, with running trials beginning at 1:20 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.
