LAWRENCE, Kan. - Sophomore Mike Murray finished second in the unseeded 1,500m to lead the way for the Illinois men's track and field team on Thursday in its first day of competition at the Kansas Relays.
Murray timed a season-best time of 3 minutes, 56.54 seconds to finish runner-up in a field of 56 entrants. Freshman Dan Kremske also ran the 1,500m, taking 18th with a personal-best time of 4:06.87.
Sophomore Brian Beaird ran his fastest 800m of the season, placing fourth in the unseeded race with a time of 1:53.44. Sophomore Scott Phelps also ran a season-best in the 800m, finishing in 1:54.34 and taking ninth.
Redshirt freshman Matt McHugh finished 13th in the hammer throw with a distance of 176 feet, 8 inches.
Illinois action at the Kansas Relays continues on Friday, with field events starting at 8 a.m. and running events starting at 9 a.m.
