CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois head coach Brad Dancer announced the signing of a second student-athlete to a national letter of intent on Tuesday. Alex Jesse (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), a blue-chip recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, joins fellow blue chip and recent Illini signee Jared Hiltzik as the second member of the 2012 recruiting class.
"Alex possesses many intangibles that associate head coach Marcos (Asse) and I feel were under the radar in the recruiting process," Dancer said. "He has had limited exposure to higher levels of tennis, but we believe his game is capable of making tremendous strides. Alex comes from a tremendous family that has instilled excellent values in him. I'm very excited to be a part of Alex's development over the next few years. He is similar to Jared in that if he can make the strength gains this year, he should have no limit to the impact he can make on our team as a freshman."
Jesse checks in at No. 25 nationally and first in the state of Wisconsin. He is 31-13 over the past year, including five wins over blue-chip recruits and 11 over five-star athletes. In 2011, Jesse captured the Midwest Designated Singles title in New Berlin, Wis., and captured the doubles title at a regional tournament in St. Louis, where he also finished runner-up in singles play behind fellow Illini signee Hiltzik. He finished in the top four in three other tournaments throughout the year and was awarded the Wisconsin Tennis Association 2011 Frank Parker Junior Award for tennis achievement and sportsmanship.
"I realize how fortunate I am to be given the opportunity to play for a top tennis and academic institution," Jesse said. "I will do my best to help bring home the NCAA title for the Illini."
