Former Illini Ruben Gonzales won his third straight double tournament over the weekend.
VOGAU, Austria - Former Illini standout Ruben Gonzales (PHI) captured his third consecutive doubles title on the International Tennis Federation circuit with a victory at the First ITF TC Kern Future (Austria F9 Futures) on Sept 9.
"Winning three titles in a row at any professional level is impressive," Illini head coach Brad Dancer said. "Ruben's continued dedication and commitment allow him to keep growing with his game. He is a great ambassador for our program."
Third-seeded Gonzales and Blaz Rola (SLO) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win in their first-round match against Anthony Loconte (ITA) and Augusto Virgili (ITA). The pair continued that momentum, taking down Otakar Lucak (CZE) and Michal Pazicky (SVK), 6-2, 4-6, (10-8), in the quarterfinals and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over second-seeded Adham El-Effendi (USA) and Darren Walsh (GBR) in the semifinals.
Gonzales and Rola took home the title with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 decision over top-seeded Lukas Jastraunig (AUT) and Tristan-Samuel Weissborn (AUT).
The victory marks Gonzales' third straight doubles title and fifth this year. In his previous two tournaments, Gonzales teamed up with Chris Letcher (AUS) to win the Mosel Open (Germany F16 Futures) and the Ueberlingen Open (Germany F15 Futures).
Gonzales' other two doubles titles of the year occurred at the USA F2 Futures in Sunrise, Fla. and USA F16 Futures in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla. After securing just four doubles titles from 2009-2011, Gonzales has more than doubled his total in 2012.
