July 27, 2014
TAMPERE, Finland - University of Illinois 2008 men's tennis alum Ruben Gonzales produced a career win on Saturday, winning the doubles championship at the Aamulehti Tampere Open. The 16-team tournament took place at the Tampere Tennis Center in Tampere, Finland, on outdoor red clay. The tournament was Gonzales' first career ATP Challenger Tour victory.
Gonzales teamed with Sean Thornley and were the third seeded team in the tournament. In the second round, the duo cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Belgium team of Germain Gigounon and David Goffin. In the semis, Gonzales/Thornley earned a walkover victory after their opponents Adam Pavlasek and Damir Dzumhur were unable to compete due to injury.
In the finals, Gonzales/Thornley squared off against Swede Elias Ymer and Russian Anton Zaitcev. After succumbing the first set in a very close tiebreak 7-6(5), Gonzales/Thornley rallied. Once again finding themselves in a tiebreak, it was Gonzales/Thornley who pushed ahead this team, claiming the second set 7-6(10). In a back-and-forth super tiebreak third set, the third seeded duo found a way to push ahead at the end of the match to take the doubles title 10-8.
"This is a well deserved win for Ruben but he still has way bigger goals on his mind," said Illinois associate head coach Marcos Asse. "I know I speak for all the Illini, past and present, when I say we are proud of Ruben. Stay tuned, because there is much more in store for Nino."
At Illinois, Gonzales was a 2008 All-Big Ten selection and guided the Illini to a Sweet 16 berth in all four years of his career, including a trip to the NCAA National Championship match in 2007.
