WINNETKA, Ill. - Former Illini and 2003 NCAA doubles champion Rajeev Ram won the Nielsen USTA Pro Tennis Championship Challenger this past weekend, in Winnetka, Ill. Ram, coming off of a second round appearance at the 2008 Doubles Championships at Wimbledon, battled through the singles main draw, coming away with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the No. 6-seeded Scoville Jenkins (USA). It is Ram's first singles title in the Challenger series.
In other Illini news, Marc Spicijaric, who will begin his senior season with the Fighting Illini in the fall, has advanced to the second round of the USA F17 Future in Peoria, Ill. Spicijaric, who qualified for the singles main draw over the weekend, advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vahid Mirzadeh on Wednesday. The Wesley Chapel, Fla., native will face Bryan Koniecko in the second round this evening with first serve set for 5:00 p.m. CT.
Also in action in Peoria, sophomore-to-be Roy Kalmanovich, faced off against Stefan Hardy (USA) in the opening round. However the Framingham, Mass., native fell short, falling 6-4, 6-4.
